PHOENIX – Yesterday, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Reproductive Freedom for All hosted a town hall in Phoenix to highlight the devastating consequences of Republican-led efforts to cut Medicaid, known as AHCCCS in Arizona, and the impacts it will have on essential reproductive healthcare for millions of Arizonans.

“Women in Arizona deserve to have control over their own bodies. But Republicans in Congress want to strip access to reproductive care from poor women in order to give tax cuts to the rich. I’m doing these town halls across the state to hear from people who will be impacted from these cuts and to make clear that Arizonans won’t stand for it,” said Senator Gallego.

Medicaid helps millions of Americans access affordable health care services, including birth control, cancer screenings, maternal health care, and more. It is the largest payer of reproductive health care in the United States, covering 42% of all births and 75% of all public spending on family planning services. Nearly two-thirds of adult women on Medicaid are of reproductive age, and proposed cuts would strip away their access to critical healthcare.

“Congressional Republicans want to strip Medicaid from millions of Americans to fuel Donald Trump’s dangerous and deadly agenda. When Trump brags about his ‘big, beautiful bill,’ he’s not talking to working families—because Medicaid funds 75% of family planning services. And he’s not talking to parents, because Medicaid funds 40% of all births in the U.S,” said Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All. “This is why I’m excited to join Senator Gallego, a reproductive freedom champion, as we talk with Arizonans about how these cuts are affecting their families and communities. We’re having the conversations that Republicans are refusing to have.”

Since House Republicans passed a Budget Resolution instructing the Energy and Commerce Committee to make $880 billion in cuts, Senator Gallego has been fighting to protect the people of Arizona and hosting Save Medicaid town halls across the state in PhoenixDouglas, and on the Yavapai Apache Nation to listen to the stories of Arizonans who will bear the brunt of these cuts.
