WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) joined The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell to discuss his first speech on the Senate floor on his resolution condemning the United States’ rejection of a United Nations resolutiondenouncing Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
“The fact that the Donald Trump will one day call Zelensky a dictator and then the other day claim that he never said it is a problem,” said Senator Gallego on MSNBC. “One day he’ll say that we’re going to help Ukraine, and the other day he will say that they owe us $350 billion worth of money that does not exist that we never gave them to begin with.
“He will consistently lie —for what end goal we just don’t understand. It is that type of inconsistency, that type of moving back and forth, that type of really not following a north star that actually directs American values, that is going to alienate a lot of our allies and push them further away from us, and sometimes, unfortunately, towards our enemies such as Russia,” he added.

The Hill: Republicans block measure condemning Trump administration vote on UN Russia resolution
[Al Weaver, 2/26/25]
Senate Republicans on Thursday objected to an effort by Democrats to condemn the Trump administration’s decision to vote against a United Nations resolution laying blame for the war in Ukraine at the feet of Russia.
Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) attempted to pass the resolution through the upper chamber via unanimous consent to take direct aim at the U.S.’s vote on Monday.
That push, however, was stymied as Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair James E. Risch (R-Idaho) objected to it. He did not explain his objection on the floor.
“Let’s be clear on this: this is a war that Russia started. Ukraine did not ask for it,” Gallego said on the floor. “They did not ask to go to war with a nuclear superpower, and they did not ask for their cities to be reduced to rubble. They didn’t ask for their children to be displaced and families to be torn apart. If Ukraine had its way, this war would have ended years ago.”
“What happened at the U.N. puts us on the same side as Russia and North Korea. That’s not just embarrassing, it is dangerous,” he added.
Reporter: “On the Senate floor today, Senator Ruben Gallego condemned the U.S. rejection of a United Nations resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It comes after previous comments from President Trump that Ukraine was responsible for the war.”

Reporter: “Senator Ruben Gallego on the Senate floor condemning the United States’ rejection of U.N. resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. sided with Russia in the vote saying it would have inflamed tensions further as the countries agree on a way to end the war. The shift on U.S. policy puts the Trump Administration at odds with key allies in Europe and several Republicans in Congress who say Russia invaded Ukraine unprovoked three years ago.”
